The choice we face

I’ve just landed in the US following an exhilarating week leading a delegation of five members of Congress to Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. [1] The trip, sponsored by the J Street Education Fund, exposed key friends of Israel in Congress to complexity on the ground, to divergent opinions and to first-hand controversy. The Delegation visited Jerusalem, Ramallah and Amman, meeting with politicians in and out of government.  We dined and debated with civil society leaders in Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.  We heard the first-hand powerful narratives of Israeli settlers, families in Sderot, human rights activists, Gilad Shalit’s father, and descendants of Palestinian refugees.

Is There A Doctor On The Slopes? It Could Be You!

Women’s Downhill Skiers Keep Olympic Medical Team Busy Did you see the women’s downhill skiing last night?  If you did, you know that the Olympic medical team was very busy attending to many athletes from the women’s downhill Olympic team.  Run after run, the skiers took turns tumbling, crashing, and slamming into the ice, losing skis, with some competitors plunging face-first onto the ice.  Fortunately, a team of top-notch physicians and sports medicine professionals were there to attend to the athletes.    Orthopedic surgeons, trauma doctors, physical therapists , massage therapists, physiatrists , and primary care physicians are a few examples of sports-related medical career professionals who may be available on site to help manage the team’s health, provide preventative care, and tend to injuries.  Additionally, EMTs and a variety of  nurses are most likely rounding out the medical team tending to the world-class athletes.  Additionally, if not for a team of  sports medicine professionals who helped her recover from a recent shin injury, Lindsey Vonn  of the US team may not have been able to score the gold medal with her winning performance.   If you are a sports fanatic, there are numerous health careers in sports medicine that may appeal to you.  While only a select few medical professionals get to treat the Olympians, there are a number of other sports medicine careers available.  You could be a team doctor for a local school’s team or pro team for football, basketball, or any team sport or other competitive athletics.  If you want a front seat to the sports action, and perhaps even impact the outcome of an event or restore an athlete’s sports career, a job in sports medicine may be for you! Imagine The Calm Of Personal Self Storage

Close your eyes and imagine this – ok, keep your eyes open, so you can read this, but pretend you have closed your eyes and can only see the pictures of the words you’re reading. On a dark, cold night you carefully step around the leftover snow patches in your driveway and get to the door as quickly as you can. After a long, hard day at work, the only thing you want more than your comfy bed it to take off those high-heeled shoes that have been pinching your toes for the past 4 hours.

5% of Healthcare Professionals in Malaysia use Telepharmacy

A group of pharmacists at the Universiti Sains Malaysia School of Pharmaceutical Sciences have published a study in this month’s issue of the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research entitled ” Evaluation Of Knowledge And Perception of Malaysian Health Professionals About Telemedicine ” ( PDF ): The study doesn’t state specifically how each respondent answered the questions, but it’s a good bet that this reflects telepharmacy use in hospital pharmacy settings, because 1) 80% of respondents were from hospitals (private and government-run), and 2) “Nurses or medical doctors in clinic settings were excluded since telemedicine is yet to become a common practice in these settings,” though telemedicine is defined as Teleradiology, Telesurgery, Telenursing as well as Telepharmacy. While 5% usage is low, this is the first I’ve heard of telepharmacy in use in Malaysia, whereas 42% of my fellow medical professionals in Malaysia have heard of it before, and as a developing country the only direction telepharmacy practice is headed there is up

Houston’s Teacher Evaluation Policy

Despite fierce opposition from the local teachers union, the Houston Independent School District approved a policy last week to use value-added test scores, a statistical method used to measure teachers’ and schools’ impact on students’ academic progress rates from year to year, as one of the criteria for teacher evaluation and teacher dismissal (some details about the policy are available here and here ).
