The idiocies of Indian right-wingers need to be pointed out

I’m always reluctant to criticize people excessively for things they say on Twitter — it’s one hundred and forty characters, for God’s sake, and people trying to squeeze a real, adult thought into that space invariably cut logical and analytical corners. But lately I have come across two (actually, three) gems that really take the cake which I must highlight.

Zhang Huan: An artist with an eye for incense ash

The depiction of the human soul is not a task every artist can handle. For Zhang Huan, one of the most recognizable names in Chinese art and a man acclaimed for “getting naked in the name of art,” his attentions have turned to the exploration of the soul, a journey symbolized by the medium of incense ash. A former performance artist, the 45-year-old is now fully clothed and his solo exhibition, which was two years in the making and named Free Tigers Return to Mountains, was featured until July 20th at the Pace Gallery in the 798 art district

NKorea threatens to retaliate against SKorea

North Korea’s military threatened Tuesday to retaliate against South Korea over its planned naval drills this week near their disputed sea border. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said that the military would crush the naval drills with a powerful physical blow and warned all civilian ships to stay away from areas near the sea border. South Korea plans to hold five-day naval drills in the Yellow sea, including near the border, beginning Thursday in response to the March sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea

Tseng hailed as Taiwan’s Tiger Woods

California signs on to education standards

The goal of the new education framework is to provide consistent instruction nationwide. But not everyone approves of the plan. California on Monday joined 31 states and the District of Columbia in approving new common learning standards in math and English language arts for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Rights group slams Philippine abortion ban

A U.S.-based rights group urged the Philippines on Monday to reform a tough anti-abortion law that it says has spawned widespread underground procedures that kill about 1,000 women each year in the predominantly Roman Catholic country. An estimated 560,000 women in the Philippines in 2008 sought abortion involving crude and painful methods such as intense abdominal massages by traditional midwives or inserting catheters into the uterus, said a report by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights.

Defiant Bangladesh garment workers protest anew

Thousands of workers from the garment industry demonstrated Monday near the Bangladeshi capital over a new minimum wage they call too low, defying government warnings against moves that might jeopardize the country’s top export earner. At least 25 protesters were injured when security officials charged with batons to remove them from a major highway at Ashulia and Savar, a major industrial hub just outside Dhaka that supplies international chains including Wal-Mart, Gap and Marks & Spencer.

The politicisation of the Internet in Thailand

The Bangkok Post has an excellent and detailed article looking at the politicisation of the Internet, and particularly social media, in Thailand – ‘Political Battles Go Online’ – which is worthy of a read, and not just because yours truly and this blog are (albeit briefly) referenced.
