Improve Your Writing With A Thesaurus

In addition to getting acquainted, or reacquainted, with your dictionary, don’t forget how helpful a thesaurus will be in helping you find the right word for every situation. Unfortunately, after high school or college, we often tend to forget about these very useful tools to aid in our writing.

Strangers, Critics, Friends or Fans

The work you do when you spread the word or run an ad or invent a policy is likely aimed at one of these four groups. Strangers are customers to be, but not yet Critics are those that would speak ill of you, or need to be converted Friends are those that might have given permission, or even buy now and then Fans are members of your tribe, supporters and insiders You already know the truth: can’t please all these groups at once. And you also probably realize that each of us with an idea to spread has a knee jerk default, the one we lean to without thinking

As elite institutions like MIT or U.C. Berkeley begin offering more online courses, maybe you’ll have a concentration — under education, you can write “degree: one-third MIT and two-thirds UMD.” Maybe you’ll want to piece together a really specific major that you couldn’t pursue at a single institution — you’ll take “Christian Art” from Notre Dame, “Care of Stained and Leaded Glass” at the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, “Construction Engineering” at Texas Tech and “Counterterrorism” at this university — and you’ll wind up with a degree in “Religious Security.”
