Steve Peha responded to Closing The Digital Gap on September 2, 2010 06:32 PM

Why Tech Hasn’t Helped (Yet) As someone who came to education after ten years in the tech world, I am an ardent user of and cheerleader for technology in life. But after fifteen years working in schools, and reading the research literature on technology use in education, I’ve noticed several patterns that suggest that we have not yet figured out how—or even if—technology helps kids learn.

Closing The Digital Gap

Advances in technology open the door to myriad new ways of delivering and personalizing education. The recently launched Digital Learning Council and other groups are working to translate powerful ideas about technology and education to powerful results in the classroom. A minority of schools, such as School of One , are already taking advantage of technology to provide innovative instruction models

What to Do When You’ve Failed a Class

Whether you’ve worked hard all semester but just couldn’t make the grade or slacked off and didn’t do well because of your own laziness, failing a class is never fun and can leave many students upset and unsure of what their next move should be. After all, a failing grade can take a big toll on a GPA and if classes are only offered certain semesters could put plans for graduation on time on hold. So what should you do if you’ve really dropped the ball and failed one of your courses

Interview Question Was a Case Question, Not a Stupid One

Peter writes: Yesterday I was on a job interview at an electronics company. The first half of the interview was going well, until the female head of development who interviewed me caught me off guard with an idiotic off-the-wall question: “How many gas stations do think there are in [name of nearest city]?” I thought for a while and then took a chance and answered “20 stations” (the real answer was 70)

On the “Ground Zero Mosque”

We left a comment on Rick Esenberg’s blog that we think deserves posting here about the “Ground Zero Mosque” (actually a Muslim community center that includes a mosque). We are all for property rights, so we think you can do anything you want with property you own unless you cause palpable harm to somebody — reducing their property values, for example

Explaining a Very Short-Term Job

Veronica writes: After a month of working in what I thought was my dream job, I can honestly say this is the biggest mistake of my life. My dream job is a nightmare. Just last Friday I asked a question about why were doing something a certain way and the boss exploded! He stormed out of the room, came back in pointed his finger in my face and told me I was stupid, that he never wanted to hire me in the first place, and that he would find some way to get me fired.

How to Prepare for a Layoff

This is what I get in my email every day… a Google Alert on the work “layoffs”: I wonder about those 2,000 employees for the Royal Bank of Scott (RBS), or the 130 employees of USA Today… did they see the writing on the wall? Did they ignore it, like I did? Or were they busy working hard, plunking on their keyboard trying to prove their value so their name wouldn’t end up on the list?

Making Group Projects Work

Working as a group can be hard– there always seems to be someone who just doesn’t quite pull their weight or really contribute to the group. Whether you’re the one who resents the slacker or you’re the slacker yourself, group work can be a bit cumbersome when people have differing ideas about how much work to do, how to do it and who should complete it. Of course, working as a group does come with an upside too, as you get instant feedback and support when working on your project.
