Notre Dame uses 3s to defeat Providence (AP)

Jonathan Peoples scored a career-high 23 points and Tim Abromaitis added 22 to lead Notre Dame to a 93-78 victory over Providence on Wednesday night. People and Abromaitis hit five 3-pointers each for the Fighting Irish (12-2, 1-0 Big East), who shot 50 percent from 3-point range. Notre Dame used a 13-0 run early in the game to go ahead 15-4 and finished the half on a 13-1 run to open a 53-32 lead.

William & Mary stuns Maryland 83-77 (AP)

William & Mary claimed another Atlantic Coast Conference victim Wednesday night, defeating Maryland 83-77 to extend its winning streak to nine games and hand the Terrapins their first home loss of the season. Sophomore Quinn McDowell scored a career-high 28 points and Danny Sumner added 17 for the Tribe (9-2), who beat Wake Forest in November.

Northwestern wins seventh straight (AP)

Michael Thompson scored 14 points as Northwestern won its seventh consecutive game Wednesday night, defeating North Florida 84-54. Five other Wildcats scored in double figures besides Thompson, as Luka Mirkovic had 13 points and a career-high eight assists, Jeremy Nash and John Shurna added 11 apiece, and freshmen Drew Crawford and Alex Marcotullio each scored 10.

Psychiatric exam sought for Pitino’s accuser

Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to order a psychiatric exam for the woman accused of trying to extort $10 million from University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino. In a motion filed Friday, prosecutors say Karen Cunagin Sypher may be “so mentally incompetent” that she doesn’t understand the legal proceedings or cannot assist in her own defense. Sypher has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of trying to extort money from Pitino and lying to the FBI.

Providence men's basketball coach Keno Davis has been given a contract extension after his first season in which the Friars won 19 games. Cops interview Louisville’s Pitino for complaint filed
