California Extending Interest-Free Loans to Hospitals and Clinics Affected by State Budget Stalemate

According to a September 2 story by the Associated Press, the California State Treasurer’s Office is offering $9 million in interest-free loans to rural hospitals and community clinics impacted by the legislature’s failure to approve a state budget. Loans are available for up to $750,000 for those rural facilities experiencing financial hardship due to delayed Medi-Cal reimbursements

City of Literature in the UI Main Library

When Iowa City was named a City of Literature in 2008, it joined Edinburgh and Melbourne to become the third city worldwide to receive this designation (Dublin, Ireland was named fourth city in July 2010)–a recognition of a century and a half of activity in a small university city that has played a role in the world of literature far out of proportion with its size. Iowa City has long been host to a lively literary scene that has extended beyond the university’s campus to inform the spirit of the community. An exhibit in The University Main Library, “City of Literature: Literary Life in Iowa City” highlights diverse aspects of literary life both at the University of Iowa and throughout Iowa City

With August temperatures in Northern California peaking in the 90s and even 100-degree range, the California Department of Public Health is urging all residents, including health professionals like Bay Area LVN s, to promote and practice cautionary measures during periods or extreme heat. The state agency provides an extensive series of tips for pet owners, seniors and other residents, such as Sacramento LVN s, to help treat and combat the effects of high temperatures. Its “Be Prepared California” website recommends valuable heat-safety practices like: 1) Remaining in cool indoor environments that, if possible, maintain colder temperatures through air conditioners

In the July-August 2010 edition of the Journal of Pharmacy Technology , Charles Peterson, David Scott, Ann Rathke, Patricia Killingsworth and George Hill describe a telepharmacy model where a central site processes orders for 9 North Dakota CAHs, where 24/7 pharmacist review of medication orders was not affordable before: Background: Smaller, critical access hospitals continue to be challenged in finding sufficient pharmacist staffing to deliver quality pharmacy services. Innovative solutions are being explored, including use of technology, to address the problem of access to pharmacy services in remote rural areas. Objective: To describe a new telepharmacy model that is being developed in North Dakota; the model establishes a central order entry site (COE site) that provides 24-hour pharmacist staffing and telepharmacy services to rural critical access hospitals within the state
