What do educators think of online classes? – Andy Gammill, Indianapolis Star

Eighty percent of superintendents who replied said they were already using some form of virtual learning in their high schools — mostly in core subjects of English, math, social studies and science. Many of those responding indicated they wanted to use virtual learning much more in foreign language education, technology education and vocational education. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed said they used virtual education for credit recovery, followed by 32 percent using it when scheduling conflicts occurred and 30 percent for at-risk students.

Facilitating Students’ Critical Thinking in Online Discussion: An Instructor’s Experience – Hua Bai, Journal of Interactive Online Learning

This paper reported using the practical inquiry model as discourse guide to facilitate students’ critical thinking in online discussion. It was found that almost all the postings of the students who had no knowledge of the inquiry model fell into exploration phase except three postings in triggering events phase and two in integration phase. In comparison, the postings of the students who used the model as the guide included more instances of integration than the postings of those who did not know about the model

Online learning viewed as increasingly viable option for Indiana students – Indiana University

A new survey of Indiana superintendents, principals and school counselors finds that a majority see virtual learning as a way to enhance academic offerings in public education. Sixty percent of respondents to the “2009 Survey of Virtual Learning in Indiana,” conducted by the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at the Indiana University School of Education, said they are offering or may offer online courses in six different areas, including alternative education, gifted and talented education, and instruction for homebound students. But just half of the respondents indicated their school would pay for virtual instruction and cited instructional cost as a barrier to offering more online courses

Nazareth Area School District is considering making students take an online class as a requirement for graduation. Superintendent Victor D. Gates: U.S. ed has no choice but to improve – eSchool News

“The world of education is the sector of the economy so far the least changed by technology,” Gates said. “Ten years from now, that won’t be the case, and these online lectures are the cutting edge of that.” Gates, 51, talked of the importance of improving the quality, quantity, and searchability of online lectures, which he noted his own children have used. Community colleges and other financially strapped schools might find online lectures to be the most cost-effective way to teach introductory courses such as Physics 101, Gates said.

Within that cohort, we built community and they were exposed to subjects and ideas not typically shared with students in their neighborhood, including financial literacy. We have done a pretty good job of identifying and measuring the educational achievement gap in our country over the last 20 years. In fact, we can quantify the achievement gap from early childhood education and track it all the way through college completion. We can disaggregate our data and track our achievement gap by race/ethnicity and by family income.
