Networking is an Investment

Rita Carey , career consulting and leadership coach , left a great comment on my post about networking (does it work?) post on Friday. Her entire comment is worth reading but I wanted to share her very last thought: “Networking, done well, is an investment.” Think about it – if you have $100 and you invest it in something relatively safe you might be able to get, say $120 out later

Don’t Forget The Rules

When it comes to making the best use of your time, you cannot afford to forget about the moving truck.  I mean, when you know that you are going to have to move all of your belongings, you should set out to rent a truck immediately, or at least make reservations.  While you may not like the extra expense at first, you are going to find, rather quickly indeed, that moving trucks are worth each and every penny.  Of course, if you are going to rent one of these, you are going to need to know a little bit about how they operate.  That, you might say, is precisely why I am writing this article. The first thing that you have to know about moving trucks is that they are, well, big.  They are much larger than your standard vehicle, which means that you are going to have to treat them with a certain amount of care.  When you are in residential neighborhoods, you are going to have to be sure that your rear view mirrors are not smacking into parked cars.  When you are on the standard roads, you are going to have to be sure that you are taking your turns a lot more slowly, and that you are not posing any sort of threat to bikers and regular cars.  Also bear in mind that you are not going to have a rear view mirror, as the cabin of the truck is going to be very large.  This, of course, means that you are going to have to make good use of your side view mirrors, both when you are driving and when you are parking.  This can take some getting used to, so you are going to want to be sure that you take the truck for a spin in the parking lot before you hit the real roads. Moving on, here, you are going to want to be sure that you have done a good job securing all of your possessions in the back of the truck.  When you make turns, your possessions are going to have a tendency to slide around a great deal, which can be pretty dangerous.  If you have lots of large, heavy furniture items, then you are going to need to be sure that they are strapped down and safe.  Even if you are careful to avoid the sharp turns and the reckless driving, you still have to take this extra step to be sure that you are not ruining all of your belongings.  I can tell you from personal experience that there is nothing fun about combining reckless driving and moving trucks.

Humanities ≠ Jobs… what?

When I was choosing my major I figured I should major in something that would help me land a job. I was pretty short-sighted and didn’t quite understand what that meant but I figured there were some majors that either didn’t get jobs or that got very low-paying jobs. I ultimately chose to get a degree in business with an emphasis in Computer Information Systems

What Do Recruiters Talk About At Conferences?

I think it’s intriguing to learn about what recruiters talk, and learn, about.  Understanding what they are paying money for and what they are trying to incorporate into their business can help you understand how to better position yourself, whether you are in an active or passive job search. Here’s parts of an agenda ( full agenda here ) from a recruiter conference… do you see a consistent theme

How to Prepare for a Layoff

This is what I get in my email every day… a Google Alert on the work “layoffs”: I wonder about those 2,000 employees for the Royal Bank of Scott (RBS), or the 130 employees of USA Today… did they see the writing on the wall? Did they ignore it, like I did? Or were they busy working hard, plunking on their keyboard trying to prove their value so their name wouldn’t end up on the list?

Tips For Motivating A Sales Force

Training a sales force is a lot like training a dog.  When you want to promote a certain kind of behavior, you incentivize it.  When you want to discourage a kind of behavior, you punish those who perpetrate it.  Of course, like most things, training a sales force is easier said than done.  If you find that your workers are not delivering the results that you are looking for, then you are going to want to read through this article with a great amount of care.  With any luck, it is going to teach you how to motivate your workers for success. The first thing that you are going to have to do, here, is make the stakes known.  If you truly expect your workers to work their hardest, then you are going to have to be entirely up front when it comes to a variety of things.  Your payment structure is going to have to be set in stone, and you are going to have to make all of that information known from the very get go.  While you may not want your workers to become too obsessed with money, that is going to happen if you do not give them all of the information that they need about their payment structure.  If your workers are working for a commission, then you are going to have to make doubly certain that they understand the terms of their commissions, how they get them, and the like.  The essential moral of the story, here, is that you have to be proactive and forthcoming when it comes to issues of money. Moving on, here, you are going to want to develop some kind of protocol for exemplifying good work.  Maybe you can hang an employee of the month photo in your break room?  Maybe you can have a spotlight section in your weekly newsletter?  Maybe you can simply pull that person aside and treat them to a nice lunch at a restaurant.  Whatever you decide, you should have some way of congratulating your best workers for their hard work.  Having worked for a company that adopted this kind of system for the most part, I can tell you personally that it works out rather well at the end of the day

No insightful blog post today

I flew into LAX yesterday and drove to Malibu last night – today I speak at Pepperdine’s MBA orientation.  I’ve done this type of thing before and have really enjoyed it. I’ll be back next week – today I’m hanging out on one of the most beautiful campuses I’ve been to with some really cool people (This morning I got up early and walked the “horseshoe” which was very hilly… I saw some fun animals (deer, rabbits, etc.) and amazing trees and greenery (hey, I live in Utah – CA is really quite amazing))

Shopping In The Good Ol Days

Back in the day, it used to be very, very hard to shop around for just about anything.  Before computers and the internet, you had to physically shop around.  You had to visit all of the local stores and check the prices out with your own two eyes, and that took a lot of time.  It was understandable, back then, for you to simply buy your products at the nearest outlet and save yourself some time.  Now, though, with the power of the internet at your disposal, you do not have an excuse for failing to shop around.  Nowadays, if you want to save yourself some money, all that you have to do is conduct a few simple search queries.  Not familiar with this method of shopping around?  Read on. Let us say that you are trying to find the self storage facility that is closest to where you live.  To do this, all that you are going to have to do is pull up a digital mapping service and input your address.  Run a Search Nearby query to find the facilities that are close to where you live, and use the ruler tool to determine precisely how far away they are.  No longer are you going to have to waste your time driving out to an office that is way too far away from your home.  Now, from the comfort of your computer chair, you are going to be able to make a fast judgement call. Of course, you are also going to want to use your computer to get a feel for what your local facilities are offering.  IF, for example, you know that you are going to need a moving service and a moving truck at the end of the day, then you are going to want to limit your search to the self storage facilities that can offer these kinds of services.  While they are going to be slightly harder to come by, they are going to drastically simplify your list of chores at the end of the day.  When you do not have to run all around town to rent your truck and get your moving service, you save yourself hours and hours of time.  That, of course, is quite important when things start to get a little bit hectic.
