After thirty-four minutes of speaking on everything from a new jobs bill, proposed banking fees, a spending freeze (to take effect after one year), and financial reform, President Obama finally discussed the sensitive issue of health reform in his State of the Union address. However, on his first few statements on the issue, he referred to it as “health insurance reform” instead of “health care reform”.

This morning on ABC’s “This Week” political news and analysis program, a panel discussed this critical week for health reform in a segment called “Down to the Wire”, an accurate depiction of the Obama administration’s last minute scramble to pass health reform legislation. With a key vote taking place this week for the Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy (D-MA), many analysts feel that Tuesday’s Massachusetts election could make or break health reform altogether. If Democrats lose the Senate seat in Massachusetts, they also lose the 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority, making Republican blockage of health reform much more likely, some say inevitable.

In its recent list of top 30 fastest-growing occupations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics included several healthcare careers that are projected to see the highest growth from 2008-2018. The list of rapidly-growing medical jobs included medical assisting, which is projected to grow by about 33.9 percent during that ten year period ending in 2018. This rate of growth will result in the creation of about 163,000 new medical assisting jobs, according to the BLS
