This is a very cool short video showing a nifty little illusion. I had it figured out about 1/3 of the way through because, after all, I am a supergenius (or, more likely, I spent my youth and a goodly part of my adult life playing with illusions). Take a look: 2D/3D illusions like this are really fun, but also something to keep in mind with a lot in visual sciences; our brains are so easy to fool with such things, making us think objects are closer or farther, smaller or bigger, than they really are.
This is very cool: a competition has been set up to allow school kids to suggest names for the small solar system bodies that orbit beyond Neptune! The competition has been OKed by the International Astronomical Union, which has a subcommittee that names such objects. The ages groups for submissions are divided up into ages 1-11, 12+, and school groups. Emily at The Planetary Society Blog has more details as well

I recently attended a conference in Boulder, and I have to admit that before I went I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Now I do, and I’m very glad I went. The meeting was the Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference 2010 (NSRC2010), and its goal was to figure out how best to exploit an upcoming revolution in space travel: private companies making suborbital launches to the very edge of space.
