Barnstorming the final frontier

In the first part of this post, Researching at the edge of space , I talked about the scientific frontier about to be opened up by suborbital flights up to 100 km (62 miles) above the Earth’s surface. The possibilities for science are exciting… but at the meeting I attended about these rockets, there was something else going on. And as interesting as the science involved with this will be, there was something bigger on everyone’s mind

365 Days of Astronomy shoots the Moon

My friend Eran Segev, an Aussie skeptic and all-around good guy, submitted a podcast to 365 Days of Astronomy dealing with the venerable Parkes radio dish and its support of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. It’s a good story — it was fictionalized in the very cute movie “The Dish” — and he interviews a couple of the men who were there during the whole thing. And if you listen to the whole thing, they mention a familiar name, too…

Researching at the edge of space

I recently attended a conference in Boulder, and I have to admit that before I went I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Now I do, and I’m very glad I went. The meeting was the Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference 2010 (NSRC2010), and its goal was to figure out how best to exploit an upcoming revolution in space travel: private companies making suborbital launches to the very edge of space.

Why Science Is Important in Italian

Actually, science is important in any language, but in this case, Paolo Navaretti took my video about why I think science is important (I originally wrote about it here ) and added Italian subtitles . I assume what he did is correct, since the only Italian I know is how to say “I am wounded,” which I learned from my dad’s WWII phrase books he had.

Vancouver skepticamp wants you!

Skepticamps are terrific events where the audience participates in the fun: instead of just inviting speakers, attendees give talks and help out. On Saturday, March 20 from 10:00 to 6:00 p.m., there will be a (free) Skepticamp in Vancouver, BC . I know a few of the skeptics from around there, and as you’d expect of Canadians they are warm, fun, and very polite

And now, the antivax failure is complete: The Lancet withdraws Wakefield’s paper

Oh, this is wonderful to hear: The Lancet — a leading UK professional medical research journal — is retracting the paper published by Andrew Wakefield back in 1998 that linked vaccines with autism. The paper has been found to be multiply and fatally flawed, with Wakefield and his work being thoroughly discredit. As the Lancet editorial itself states : Following the judgment of the UK General Medical Council’s Fitness to Practise Panel on Jan 28, 2010, it has become clear that several elements of the 1998 paper by Wakefield et al.

Come to a space conference in Boulder!

On February 18 – 20, in my home town of Boulder, Colorado, the Lunar and Planetary Institute is holding a very interesting conference called The Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference 2010 (NSRC2010). It’s to promote the awareness of the coming revolution in access to space provided by private companies. This revolution is not only coming, it’s practically here.

Hubble captures picture of asteroid collision!

Last week, the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) sky survey program, designed to sweep the heavens looking for near-Earth asteroids, spotted something really weird ; an elongated streak that looked as if two asteroids had collided. Just days later, Hubble was pointed at the object, and what it saw was really really weird : [Click to armageddonate.] This is a false-color image showing the object, called P/2010 A2, in visible light. The long tail of debris is obvious; this is probably dust being blown back by the solar wind, similar to the way a comet’s tail is blown back
