Marquette Student Government: No Free Speech About Homosexuality
Last night, the Marquette University Student Senate passed a resolution condemning “prejudicial attacks” on gays and lesbians , claiming that “On Marquette’s campus LGBTQ issues in the past have been overlooked” and that “LGBTQ individuals have been subjected to intentional and unintentional prejudicial attacks . . . .” This might seem bland enough, although actual harassment and discrimination against gays (and a long list of other groups) has long been against university rules

Obama: Giving Liberal Ideas a Try-Out For the First Time in Decades
From Matt Welch at Reason.com : In just about every speech at their 2008 convention, Democrats promised voters that a change in the White House would, in Barack Obama’s formulation, restore “our moral standing” in the world. Replace the unilateralist cowboy at the top with a humbler multilateralist, and the path would finally be cleared to fix vexing international issues such as curbing carbon emissions and dealing with the mullahs in Iran. Like many of the party faithful’s long-nurtured beliefs, this hope has disintegrated on contact with reality

Marquette’s Lawyers: Not Understanding the Law on Politicians Brought to Campus to Speak
Political Science Department Chairman Barry McCormick has faced a bit of harassment from University officials , apparently originating in the Office of the General Counsel of Marquette University, due to the fact that two Wisconsin politicians are going to speak at a debate on campaign finance reform tomorrow night . McCormick will moderate the debate. University officials have expressed the fear that Marquette will jeopardize its tax-exempt status by hosting politicians running for office.

Inviting Politicians to Campus: More
From Daniel Suhr, a response to our post detailing how Marquette has a rather illogical and ill-thought out policy on bring politicians (including those who may be running for reelection) to campus. Not only is your post about campaign finance right on point, let me add an additional consideration: the university bureaucrats seem to underappreciate the fact that these are incumbents still in legislative session

Thus far, I have done the following: (1) networked through associates and friends; (2) attended career fairs; (3) applied for positions online that are posted to corporation’s websites or my university’s job postings. I have not had an interview since December. Can you provide any advice? Does Professional Artist Need MFA Degree?
Connie writes: I’m 29 and I have finally realized my ideal profession is to be an artist. However, in addition to the late start, I’ve had no formal training (only inherited talent) and becoming a painter seems to be a bad financial move. From my research a MFA is necessary to be considered a professional artist. Do I really want to spend $40,000 for a degree that doesn’t guarantee any return? But I just want to paint and I’m so tired of working in offices… How can I have a struggling career when I can’t afford the training?

Post-mortem on Spelling Error on Submitted Applications
Anonymous writes: I have applied several times to a particular company and just discovered, much to my horror, that I had been spelling the city’s name wrong (at least three applications so far). It’s a two-word name and I made it one word. Worse, it’s a company I do business with regularly and that’s one of my “ins” into the company, my “knowledge” of them, and yet I didn’t know such a small thing
