Story of My Life
I am SO sorry that I have been so lax in my posting these past few weeks. My life seems to just keep getting more complicated and busy…but I'm loving it! As I mentioned earlier, I ran for a seat on my student government association's senate…and I won!!! I am SO excited about getting involved with all the other senators as well as the executive positions within the SGA. I'm a dork but I love stuff like that. Last week I went to our state's capitol along with a delegation from my school as well as all of the other schools across the state to meet with legislators in order to hopefully secure more money for the funding of higher education in the state. It was a really neat experience and allowed us to get a feel about how the legislative process works in relation to the budget of the state and how it is doled out.

Economic Downturn…
I hate economics. Period. I think it is an extremely difficult subject and class and I do not know why I am required to take it. At first, I didn't think it was going to be that bad. I liked my teacher and the course seemed a little hard but I didn't think it would be something that I couldn't handle. Oh, but I was wrong. I did HORRIBLY on the first two tests. I went to my professor the other day and had a chat about the class and my grade and such and he recommended dropping it…I really don't want to but we'll see…

Spring Fever!
We have had absolutely BEAUTIFUL weather this past week. It is making everybody crazy! I am so ready for permanent warm weather. Spring is definitely my favorite time of the year and I'm so looking forward to it! It's making it hard to concentrate when it is so pretty outside. When I walk to class and it is nice outside there are people sitting out on the lawn and eating lunch or doing homework. It is like a perfect picture of what those college brochures look like. I love it!

Balancing Act
Being in college requires balancing a lot of things and some major multi-tasking. For example, as I am writing this I am waiting on my laundry to finish and eating lunch. I have to balance massive amounts of school work with extracurricular activities with a social life with regular hygiene. It can get really difficult sometimes. I LOVE to be involved on campus–I was really involved in high school and I just like to be busy with important things to do. People always talk about being able to say “no” though. I just don't know at what point I would have TOO much to do. Am I there? Am I past that point? I have a meeting almost every night, hours of homework, and plenty of friends. And I am still applying for organizations and I'm running for a Student Government Senate seat. Am I overbooked? How will I know?? These are just some things that I've been thinking about lately. I guess I'll figure it out soon! I hope…

New Evidence That Part Time Faculty Produce Fewer Successful College Students
Several studies suggest a negative impact from high percentages of part time community college faculty upon student transfer rates, student advising, faculty class preparation, active teaching techniques, and participation in teaching workshops. Scholars suggest part timers be assigned to students least likely to need extra help. The research is a start on exploring this vital issue because community college teachers are 67% part time

As Joblessness Soars, So Does Adult Education Enrollment
According to the Contra Costa times, enrollment in vocational training programs such as Medical Assistant is soaring. Here is an excerpt from the article: Sharae Gandy and Donna Gutierrez are victims of the depressed housing market who are turning their misfortunes into new opportunities. More than a year ago, both women enjoyed well-paying positions in financial institutions that specialized in home loans

Performance in Middle Grades Strong Predictor Of College Success
A 2008 ACT report, “The Forgotten Middle” (www.act.org) finds that under current conditions the level of achievement that students attain by eight grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduated from high school than anything that happens academically in high school. This includes family background, high school course work , and high school grade point average

Data Gaps Hinder Measurement of College Prep and Success
A recent blog summarized the findings of Measuring Up by the National Center For Public Policy and Higher Education. Each state receives grades on key indicators of college success such as college preparation In an interview the prime author Pat Callan pointed out that much of the information the government collects is about a diminishing part of the college population – first time, full time students who remain at the same institution throughout their college careers. Moreover, the federal government cannot track a students academic, enrollment , or financial aid history as they progress or change colleges.Fewer states participate in government surveys of high school course taking patterns.
