Technical Difficulties

Sorry for the delay in posts and now the avalanche of new posts that I'm putting up! I accidentally started a new blog and was posting to that blog instead of this one…oopsie. I only realized how to fix and switch over the posts today. Basically I have no tech skills whatsoever, which should prove interesting tonight at my first DJ apprenticeship 'show'.

Back in the Saddle

Hey everyone! The holidays are over and the new year has begun…new classes, new professors, hopefully some new friends and guess what…NEW SCHEDULING ISSUES! Haahha. Well it's really no big deal. The fact is that I cant decide whether to take a fun class that requires lots of reading that I wont mind doing, OR a class that is closer to my interests for my major that also requires reading, but of a more intense sort.

Not so soon…

So school for me is not exactly over.  I have decided to take a class this summer so I will be back in the studying-mode for a little bit.  I am taking it at the local community college and it is only second term so it shouldn't be that bad.  It is kind of an ordeal to get registered for classes at a different school, though.  You first have to make sure that the credit will transfer.  Then you have to get a letter of transiency from your original school send to your other school.  Then you have to apply, be accepted and register at the school that you would like to take classes at in the summer.  Once you know the steps its not that hard but getting them all done by the deadline can be kind of stressful.  I think that more schools should educate their students about the process because a lot of students do it.  I got it done, thankfully, and I will start class at the end of this month!

Home Sweet Home

I am now back at home.  My stuff is all over the house and I can barely move around in my room but sleeping in my own bed is very nice!  I am looking forward to seeing all of my friends from home and catching up but I can already tell that it's going to be a little weird being home after all this time.  Everyone has their own things that they are doing and places they are going.  Some of my friends are studying abroad or taking summer classes or getting jobs so I don't know how much time I will actually have to hang out with them.  We'll see!

New Friends

I feel like I have made a few really good new friends lately-which I love–but it is really bad timing!  I wish I had known these people at the beginning of the year instead of now that we are all about to leave for the summer,  I guess this means that I will have to do a better job at keeping in touch during the break and make a huge effort to re-connect as soon as we get back.  I feel like thats going to be the hardest thing to to next year–reconnect with the people that I got to be really good friends with.  we're all going to be living in different places next year and I just think it's going to be a lot harder.  I know i will make new friends but I really don't want to lose the ones I have from this year!!  That is my New [school] Year's Resolution…keep in touch!

Definitely not Dead Week

At my school we have what is called “Dead Week” which is the week before final exams.  This means that teachers cannot assign any more graded projects or tests or homework because you are supposed to use the time to prepare for exams.  I have been in college for two semesters now, and I have discovered that Dead Week is anything but dead!  Since there are no tests or papers, this is the time that people decide to have final meetings and many officer elections take place.  And on top of all of the academic stress, this week is when all of the end of the year get-togethers happen!  I”ve had dinners with different groups of friends for the last time until we come back next year and many people have end of the year parties.  It's a lot to fit on one's calendar!  Somehow I'll manage though…

Story of My Life

I am SO sorry that I have been so lax in my posting these past few weeks.  My life seems to just keep getting more complicated and busy…but I'm loving it!  As I mentioned earlier, I ran for a seat on my student government association's senate…and I won!!!  I am SO excited about getting involved with all the other senators as well as the executive positions within the SGA.  I'm a dork but I love stuff like that.  Last week I went to our state's capitol along with a delegation from my school as well as all of the other schools across the state to meet with legislators in order to hopefully secure more money for the funding of higher education in the state.  It was a really neat experience and allowed us to get a feel about how the legislative process works in relation to the budget of the state and how it is doled out.

Economic Downturn…

I hate economics.  Period.  I think it is an extremely difficult subject and class and I do not know why I am required to take it.  At first, I didn't think it was going to be that bad.  I liked my teacher and the course seemed a little hard but I didn't think it would be something that I couldn't handle.  Oh, but I was wrong.  I did HORRIBLY on the first two tests.  I went to my professor the other day and had a chat about the class and my grade and such and he recommended dropping it…I really don't want to but we'll see…

Spring Fever!

We have had absolutely BEAUTIFUL weather this past week.  It is making everybody crazy!  I am so ready for permanent warm weather.  Spring is definitely my favorite time of the year and I'm so looking forward to it!  It's making it hard to concentrate when it is so pretty outside.  When I walk to class and it is nice outside there are people sitting out on the lawn and eating lunch or doing homework.  It is like a perfect picture of what those college brochures look like.  I love it!

Balancing Act

Being in college requires balancing a lot of things and some major multi-tasking.  For example, as I am writing this I am waiting on my laundry to finish and eating lunch.  I have to balance massive amounts of school work with extracurricular activities with a social life with regular hygiene.  It can get really difficult sometimes.  I LOVE to be involved on campus–I was really involved in high school and I just like to be busy with important things to do.  People always talk about being able to say “no” though.  I just don't know at what point I would have TOO much to do.  Am I there?  Am I past that point?  I have a meeting almost every night, hours of homework, and plenty of friends.  And I am still applying for organizations and I'm running for a Student Government Senate seat.  Am I overbooked?  How will I know?? These are just some things that I've been thinking about lately.  I guess I'll figure it out soon!  I hope…

New Evidence That Part Time Faculty Produce Fewer Successful College Students

Several studies suggest a negative impact from high percentages of part time community college faculty upon student transfer rates, student advising, faculty class preparation, active teaching techniques, and participation in teaching workshops. Scholars suggest part timers be assigned to students least likely to need extra help. The research is a start on exploring this vital issue because community college teachers are 67% part time

As Joblessness Soars, So Does Adult Education Enrollment

According to the Contra Costa times, enrollment in vocational training programs such as Medical Assistant is soaring. Here is an excerpt from the article: Sharae Gandy and Donna Gutierrez are victims of the depressed housing market who are turning their misfortunes into new opportunities. More than a year ago, both women enjoyed well-paying positions in financial institutions that specialized in home loans

Performance in Middle Grades Strong Predictor Of College Success

A 2008 ACT report, “The Forgotten Middle” (www.act.org) finds that under current conditions the level of achievement that students attain by eight grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduated from high school than anything that happens academically in high school. This includes family background, high school course work , and high school grade point average

Data Gaps Hinder Measurement of College Prep and Success

A recent blog summarized the findings of Measuring Up by the National Center For Public Policy and Higher Education. Each state receives grades on key indicators of college success such as college preparation In an interview the prime author Pat Callan pointed out that much of the information the government collects is about a diminishing part of the college population – first time, full time students who remain at the same institution throughout their college careers. Moreover, the federal government cannot track a students academic, enrollment , or financial aid history as they progress or change colleges.Fewer states participate in government surveys of high school course taking patterns.
