Rule 5 Draft Is Becoming An Afterthought

How much of an afterthought is the Rule 5 draft these days? Well, during the 2009 Winter Meetings, the minor leagues were based in one hotel, major league executives and media in another, and the trade show was in the convention center, basically in the middle. The Rule 5 was in a third hotel next door, sort of off to the side, where little other Winter Meetings activity transpired.

Indians Add, Subtract In Rule 5 Draft

For the first time since 2002, the Indians were both buyers and sellers at baseball’s annual Rule 5 Draft. Not only hoping to protect their own players as usual, but also open to adding someone from another organization, the Indians selected two players—including righthander Hector Ambriz from the Diamondbacks—and lost two minor leaguers—including lefthander Chuck Lofgren—to the Giants.

Curtis Granderson Heads To New York In Three-Team Trade

Looking to pare payroll in tough economic times, the Tigers parted ways with all-star center fielder Curtis Granderson, sending him to the Yankees, and righthander Edwin Jackson, sending him to the Diamondbacks. In exchange, Detroit acquired four young, cost-controlled players in the seven-piece deal with Arizona and New York.
