Signing Deadline Wraps Up All-Star Haul For Tigers

Who could blame David Chadd for being excited about his team’s haul in this year’s draft? After all, even without a first-round pick, the Tigers drafted and signed Evan Longoria, Huston Street and Cliff Lee. While that may be hyperbole, the three deals the Tigers made moments before this year’s signing deadline brought three players into the system that Chadd, the vice president of amateur scouting, described as similar to those three stars.

Giants Acquire Situational Lefty Javier Lopez

The Giants dealt a couple of spare parts to the Pirates to acquire lefty Javier Lopez, a situational releiver who has held lefthanded batters to a career line of .243/.337/.351 over 608 plate appearances. The Pirates acquired a pair of 27-year-olds in righthander Joe Martinez and corner outfielder John Bowker, both of whom have spent time in the big leagues and in Triple-A Fresno.
