Without them
One of the most common things I hear is, “I’d like to do something remarkable like that, but my xyz won’t let me.” Where xyz = my boss, my publisher, my partner, my licensor, my franchisor, etc. Well, you can fail by going along with that and not doing it, or you can do it, cause a ruckus and work things out later. In my experience, once it’s clear you’re willing (not just willing, but itching, moving, and yes, implementing) without them, things start to happen

MBA’s for Engineers? A Student’s Perspective, Part II
Listeners with engineering backgrounds often write to us wanting to know how candidates like them fare in the application process, what can help set them apart from their fellow engineer applicants, what their degree options are, and what career opportunities will an MBA open up to them. We’ll address all of these issues (and more) in an upcoming podcast. Today, I spoke with two current MBA students from the MIT Leaders for Global Operations program who were both engineers before coming back to campus and who are both using their MBA to expand their careers beyond the traditional engineering track.

If You’re Military, MBA Might Be a Good Fit
“Military personnel have the leadership skills, the ethics, drive, and decision-making skills that major corporations want, however, they are often lacking the theoretical business know-how.” That’s what Ethan Hanabury, Senior Associate Dean for Degree Programs at Columbia Business School observes. Those unique skills — and the lack of a few key skills — lead many military personnel to MBA schools. Dean Hanabury suggests military applying to schools such as Columbia, reach out to military already on campus to get tips to writing strong applications.

MBA’s for Engineers? Definitely. Tips on Getting In.
We often get the question ‘does an MBA make sense for engineers?’ To answer the question, I’ve been working on an upcoming MBA Podcaster show. What kind of personality does it take for an engineer to be admitted and then succeed in business school? How should applicants with engineering backgrounds present themselves to schools, especially if they’re a self-described ‘pocket-calculator nerd’, i.e

Going from the Military to the MBA – A Student’s Perspective
“Once you combine the leadership and management experience of a military member with the formal business training you get out of an MBA program, that person is a powerful and valuable resource for the corporation. So it’s a really great value proposition for the student, as well as for the company, and therefore for the school.” That statement comes from an Air Force veteran who served six years as an intelligence officer.

Attending University Online, Part I
Who would have ever imagined when I was in my twenties and graduating from college that I would someday return to school – in my living room? I can’t believe the many advances we have made since the inception of the Internet and it would have been difficult to imagine all of the things that would materialize and become possible in light of the Internet’s existence

Online Degree Programs Open a Whole New World
Going to college was not a given in my family. With so many brothers and sisters I knew that my parents didn’t have the money to send us all and those of us who did go would have to go with the support of many loans. My parents always encouraged us to go to college, however, and they did whatever they could to help us achieve that goal.

Online Degree Programs Remove Boundaries, Part II
In the last post I talked about my desire to pursue my MBA – having graduated many years ago with an undergraduate business degree. I had wanted to go straight to grad school but I soon found myself raising children on my own and working a full time job; school was simply not anything that I could imagine fitting into my schedule. That’s when I discovered online degree programs – the modern and certainly effective alternative to traditional school

Whenever I thought about going back to school all I could think about were the obstacles that would be in front of me. I had left school long ago – graduating with my business undergraduate degree and I had desperately wanted to go forward to earn my MBA. Life, however, had other plans for me and before I knew it I was working crazy hours and raising two children on my own

Nonprofit Management Degree Keeps Me Competitive, Part II
In the last post I talked about my career path and how it had not included a college degree – something that I had chosen to do as I was much more interested in working than I was in going to school. I immediately pursued a career in nonprofit and had remained there ever since, working my way up, gaining experience and respect in the industry, and loving every minute of my role in helping people in a variety of ways.

"All I do is work here"
Over the past few months, I’ve had quite a few interactions with several people who work at a (previously great) brand. One person will email to ask me for a favor or a connection, and I’ll point out that just yesterday, I got three emails, all spam, from three different people at the organization either selling me something irrelevant or sending me a press release I didn’t ask for. And the unsubscribe button doesn’t work. And I’ve unsubscribed ten times before.

Nonprofit Management Degree Keeps Me Competitive, Part I
When I first began working in nonprofit I was young – just out of high school – with not the slightest desire to go to college. I was ready to work and I knew that my heart was – and had always been – in helping people. My first job paid next to nothing but I was really happy working for an organization that helped raise money for cancer and that helped allocate those funds appropriately.

Working for an Online Business Degree
I work for a really great company that offers steadfast support to its employees including competitive pay, comprehensive benefits including health, dental, vision, retirement savings, and even the option to put away money for our children’s college education. They even offer tuition reimbursement – something that I noted when I initially accepted my job but that I had not yet pursued. I came to this company having left college early because of mounting financial concerns and the need to start working immediately.

Making the Most of Short GMAT Breaks
We heard from our friends at Manhattan GMAT that as of today, the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) may be shortening the length of break time in between test sections during the three-hour GMAT. Rumor has it that the break times will be shortened from ten minutes to eight minutes, leaving test takers with two less minutes to refresh themselves mentally for the next section
